Welcome to Real Story. In life we often think the “big things” stay in our memory the longest, and not many might remember a stranger in their life. But what’s funny is it’s the little things and the strangers that make us think so much, the little things do matter, they might make a different world in another person’s life. In today’s show, I will tell stories about two drivers. Drivers, no matter they are bus drivers or taxi drivers, just like everybody else, some are nice and helpful, some are bad and less friendly. I want to talk about the good ones.
Ron Ruiz was a New York City bus driver. He met many passengers on the job, but there is one he still thinks about today. This bus driver’s simple act of kindness made a woman’s day. ~~(Ron’s voice)~~
~~I remember one woman, in particular, a senior, who got on my bus and she seemed completely lost. I could see she was confused. I don’t know whether it was an illness but she looked so beautiful for a hot summer day to have fur on. So I said: “Are you ok?”And she said: “I’m fine, but I don’t know what restaurant I’m meeting my friends.”I said: “You sit in the bus and I’ll run in and check each restaurant.”
The very very last one on the left, I said: “It’s gotta be this one.” So I said : “Stay here sweetie, it’s nice and cool in here. ” I went in and said : “There’s a lady in the bus and she’s not sure (about)the restaurant.” And I saw a whole bunch of other seniors there, and they said: “It’s probably her!” So I ran back to the bus and I said: “ Sweetie, your restaurant is right here. ” And I said: “NO NO, don’t move.” And I grabbed her hand and I remember my right hand grabbed her right hand. I wanted to make her feel special, like it was a limousine, it’s a bus! And she said she felt like a Cinderella. And she said: “I’ve been diagnosed with cancer, and today is the best day of my life. ” Just because I helped her off the bus, and I never forgot that woman.
It’s Ron Ruiz telling his story. 15 years ago when I was on the second year of college, I decided to see the city close to my college: Shanhaiguan city, which was 2 hours’ train ride and my first time to travel alone, just to see around. The part of the trip that stays in my mind for ever is not about how beautiful the city was, it was about a stranger taxi driver that helped me find a cheap hotel. After I finished the sightseeing, I wanted to find a hotel for the night, but I couldn’t afford nice hotels as I was still a student. A man on a three-wheel taxi stopped and asked me where to go. I told him and he took me to a very small but clean hotel after 50 minutes ride. I was thinking: “50 minutes’ taxi can cost a lot.” Surprisingly he charged me only 3 Yuan and he took me into the hotel himself and asked the owner to find a good room for me. He talked to the owner for a few minutes and they charged me 30 Yuan for that night. Right after I paid money to the hotel, he disappeared in the dark. He is the best driver I have ever met, and I don’t even know his name .
