The team that conducted the study asked about 6,600 US teenagers, aged between 12 to 15, to report how much time a day they spent on social media, as well as whether they had any mental health problems.

The results show that three hours of social media correlated with higher rates of mental health issues, including depression, anxiety, aggression, and antisocial behavior.

Maybe addressing rumors that social media was "causing" health problems, the researchers clarified that they only found correlations and it should not be mistaken for a necessarily causal relationship.

A panicky user even commented: "Wow! I am at its late stage."

Caijing.com organized an online poll, in which 18,000 of the 43,000 respondents said they were constantly on social media when awake. Another 18,000 said they would feel worse without social media.

Zhou Xuhui, head and a leading expert at curbing network addiction at the Brain Hospital in Hunan province, said the original report had already stressed there was no confirmed causal relationship between spending too much time on social media and mental problems and this should not be misread.

"Generally speaking, people with mental health problems might prefer to leave their social environments and turn to the virtual world instead," she said. "And if they stay there too long, these people might have problems dealing with relationships in the real life. However, at least for now we cannot say it is social media that is causing mental problems."

Zhou Jian, a senior doctor who handles depression cases at the hospital, agrees. "Maybe some of the teenagers surveyed already have mental problems, so they turn to the virtual world," she said.
